Investment Approach

We seek to maximise investment returns through fundamental bottom-up stock picking and capitalizing on market inefficiencies. We adopt a long-term valuation driven approach grounded on proprietary research and overlay this with our own top-down macro-economic view. When constructing a portfolio we manage risk at every level, understanding the role of political risk and the importance of the ability to liquidate individual positions.

In determining a share's true worth we endeavour to know every aspect of a company. Choosing a share in Africa is no different, and hence we spend a lot of time in each of the countries, talking to management and 'kicking the tyres'.

Benefiting from the shared knowledge and perspective on markets, brands, competitors, industries and sectors of the entire investment team, all potential investments are viewed against their country and international peers. A unique advantage to our approach are the insights gained from our strong relationships with management of the many South African companies that have expanded into the region across the banking, retail, resources and telecommunications sectors. Furthermore, our reputation and experience in southern Africa has enabled us to extend our stock broking network northwards, accessing local knowledge and gaining preferential exposure to untapped opportunities.

The portfolios invest in companies listed on the African stock exchanges, pre-ipo listed companies and those whose core business is in Africa yet listed outside the continent in e.g. London, Toronto or Sydney.
