Conversation #7

Keki
Mistry

Keki Mistry is Vice Chairman & CEO of India’s Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) – one of India’s largest providers of housing finance.

Much like South Africa, India has traditionally had high levels of poverty and a low rate of home ownership. While the reasons for this differ, both countries are seeing the demand for affordable housing increase, given the steady movement of people to urban areas. India has been innovative in its structure and policy design to improve the affordability of home ownership.

With four decades of experience in the housing finance market, and as the head of HDFC, Mr. Mistry brings a nuanced understanding of opportunities emerging in the affordable housing market amid a global economy indelibly marked by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Mistry has played a critical role in the successful transformation of HDFC into one of India's leading financial services conglomerates by facilitating the formation of companies including HDFC Bank Ltd., HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd., HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company Ltd, and HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company Ltd.

Mr Mistry is on the Board of Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., and Torrent Power Ltd. He is a Member of the Primary Market Advisory committee constituted by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), and was a Member of the Corporate Governance Committee constituted by SEBI in 2017. Mistry was also Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Corporate Governance Committee 2016-17 to 2017-2018. He is currently the Chairman of the CII National Council on Corporate Governance.

Mr Mistry has received several important recognitions, including being awarded CEO of The Year in the banking, financial services, and insurance category at the 2019 CNBC-AWAAZ CEO Awards - instituted to honour India’s most powerful corporate leaders, 'BMA Management Man of the Year 2016' at the 37th Bombay Management Association (BMA) and 'Best Independent Director Award 2014' by the Asian Centre for Corporate Governance & Sustainability.

Natascha
Viljoen

Returning from Australia to her native South Africa to step into the role of Anglo American Platinum CEO in April 2020, Natascha has taken the helm of one of the world’s most prominent platinum miners.

Handed the considerable challenge of leading a company with a vast underground workforce operating in confined spaces through the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic, she draws on her 28 years of operational experience from across the mining industry.

Among her experience is six years at Lonmin, where, as Executive Vice President of Processing, she experienced perhaps one of her most profound professional challenges during the Marikana Mine incident. She continues to draw on the learnings from this today.

A highly accomplished metallurgical engineer who grew up in a North West mining town, Natascha also sits on the Anglo American Platinum Board and the Group Management Committee of Anglo American plc. Prior to this, she spent six years as Group Head of Processing for Anglo American.

Natascha holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from North-West University – as one of only eleven women in her class - and an Executive Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Cape Town.
