Why offshore investing with Coronation makes sense for you

Access more markets and investment opportunities

As a South African investor, you don't have to limit your wealth-building opportunities to the local market. Investing offshore opens the door to a far broader range of options than those available locally.

To put it in perspective, the combined market capitalisation of the world's top five stock exchanges is ~80 times the size of the JSE.

Access more markets: combined market cap of the top 5 exchanges is 80 times that of the JSE
Offshore diversification: spread investments across global markets to reduce country-specific risk.

Diversify your portfolio

Investing globally allows you to diversify your portfolio across different countries, economies and currencies. This broader reach can reduce reliance on the performance of any one market or investment.

Tap into Coronation's 26 years of international investing

We've spent more than two decades building a suite of global funds with South African investors in mind. All are managed by globally experienced investment experts, who stay true to our long-standing, valuation-driven investment philosophy. This allows us to uncover the most compelling opportunities across asset classes and around the world.

What are the benefits and limitations?

Here’s a summary of the key benefits and limitations of an offshore unit trust investment.

Benefits

  • Invest from as little as R500 a month in a rand-denominated international fund or a lump sum of $500/€500/£500 in one of our foreign currency-denominated funds
  • Increased potential overall return through access to a broader and more diverse opportunity set
  • Reduced overall risk through diversification
  • Unrestricted access to your money, however, a long-term horizon is recommended to fully realise the benefit of having meaningful exposure to global growth assets
  • Switch or withdraw at any time
  • No initial fees or administration fees

Limitations

  • For our foreign currency-denominated funds, a regular income cannot be paid out; interest and dividends earned are automatically re-invested
  • For our foreign currency-denominated funds, you need to use your own offshore allowance (up to a maximum of R11 million per annum) or money that is already offshore
  • For our foreign currency-denominated funds you may need to obtain tax-clearance

How this chart is calculated

The current investment amount is calculated based on the past performance figures of the fund. Performance is measured on NAV prices with income distributions reinvested and quoted after the deduction of all cost incurred within the fund. Past performance is not necessarily an indication of future performance. Lump sum and monthly contributions are assumed to be made at the beginning of the month, with the first monthly contribution occurring in the 2nd month. An Internal Rate of Return calculation is used when a monthly contribution is selected. It is an indicative approximation of the actual return. The value of investments may go down as well as up, and is therefore not guaranteed.

Our insights

Frequently asked questions

At Coronation, global fund is our collective term for any fund that invests in international assets, which includes both our rand-denominated feeder funds and our foreign currency-denominated funds. Our global funds give you access to opportunities beyond South Africa’s borders, across different countries, industries, and currencies.

An offshore fund is a type of global fund that is foreign-domiciled (registered outside South Africa) and denominated in a foreign currency (such as US dollars, euros, or pounds). When you invest in an offshore fund, your money leaves South Africa, and the investment is held in an overseas account.

If you invest in a rand-denominated feeder fund, your money stays in South Africa but your investment still provides exposure to international markets.

Investing in rands?

There is no limit on the amount that you can invest offshore.

Investing in foreign currency?

The following annual foreign investment allowances apply to South African residents (with a valid ID and tax number) wanting to invest in foreign currency:

  • R1 million discretionary allowance

No SARS approval is required for this allowance. It covers the total value of all your foreign transactions in a calendar year, including overseas holiday spending, international credit card purchases, and any offshore investments you make.

  • R10 million foreign capital allowance

Requires SARS approval via an Approval for International Transfer (AIT). AIT approval typically takes 21 working days. Approvals over R10 million may take 4–10 weeks.

If you’re a South African resident with a green ID book or smart ID and a tax number, you qualify.

  • Companies, trusts, partnerships, foundations, clubs.
  • Anyone under 18 or not in good standing with SARS.
  • Up to R1 million: No approval for International Transfer (AIT) required.
  • R1m – R11m: AIT from SARS required (valid for 12 months).
  • Above R11m: Requires a “letter of compliance” from SARS and SARB approval.
  • Standard AIT: ~21 working days.
  • Amounts over R10 million: 4–10 weeks.
  • R11 million per year without SARB approval.
  • More than R11 million possible with special approval.

Yes, if these assets were obtained legally through allowances or permitted sources, you can invest other assets offshore in addition to your annual allowances (R11m per year) and special approvals (more than R11m per year). These assets include:

  • Growth/income on previously transferred funds where such income was retained abroad
  • Income earned abroad from a foreign employer after 1 July 1997 and either retained abroad or remitted to South Africa
  • Foreign inheritances
  • Own foreign capital introduced into South Africa on or after 1 July 1997 funds for which amnesty was granted in terms of the Exchange Control Amnesty and Amendment of Taxation Laws Act, 2003 (Act No. 12 of 2003), unless amnesty was granted on the basis that the funds had to be repatriated to South Africa
  • Other amounts if specific approval has been obtained from the SARB

You cannot invest assets offshore that were acquired in contravention of exchange controls.

  • From abroad: Yes, if there’s no recourse to SA.
  • From another SA resident: Yes, but not if it circumvents exchange controls. Family loans are generally acceptable.

No. You may transfer in tranches under a valid tax clearance certificate.

Yes. It resets every year on 1 January. Unused amounts do not carry over.

You’re responsible for monitoring your transfers.

  • If you notify SARB first: fine of 20–40% of the excess.
  • If not: the full excess may be confiscated.
  • Capital gains tax (CGT) applies if you sell units held as capital assets.
  • Income tax applies if the units were held for speculation.
  • Coronation funds are structured as roll-up funds, so income is reinvested (not distributed).

Usually not. Your SA will applies to global assets. But if you own significant/complex foreign assets, consult a local attorney in that jurisdiction.

Coronation can:

  • Transfer proceeds offshore (subject to anti-money laundering rules).
  • Pay into your offshore account.
  • Pay into an SA currency account (subject to FICA and other laws).
